The coffee

Uganda is rewriting its coffee story. Kigezi Valley Coffee sits in the far southwest of Uganda at over 2000 metres, in the Kigezi Highlands bordering Rwanda and the DRC. Over 300 smallholder farmers work with Mountain Harvest's network here, supported by a team of agronomists who joined in 2023. This is only their second season. This is what high altitude naturally processed coffee tastes like.

Origin

The land does the work. Kigezi sits at the confluence of two forces: the volcanic soil of the western rift and the mist rolling off lakes Bunyonyi and Mutanda. Day to night temperatures swing dramatically at this altitude, slowing the cherry down and concentrating sugars over a longer ripening period. Abundant sunshine and over 1500mm of annual rainfall mean the plants are never stressed and never rushed. The result is a coffee that tastes exactly like where it comes from. Bright, fruit-forward, and alive.

Process

Natural processed, dried whole. Cherries are sorted for quality using a float tank to remove defective fruit, then transferred to raised beds or tarpaulins to dry with the fruit intact. That slow drying with the cherry on is what pushes the strawberry, mango, and honeydew into the cup. No shortcuts, just time and care.

Brew it your way

Made for filter, holds up as espresso. The fruit character in this coffee opens up beautifully as a filter at 1:16. Pull it as espresso at a 1:2 ratio in 28 to 32 seconds and the strawberry and creme brulee come right through.
